See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
Back when I was in 7th grade I remember playing football. My biggest memory, besides being one of the smallest kids on the team, was winning district with a perfect record. I think we were like 10-0 for the season. Anyway, we were the power house team! I am not sure if the parents of our team were giving there kids supplements from birth, but our line was twice the size of anyone other teams line. Our receivers were all like 6 foot and fast. Our running back short and fast. To say the least, our team was stacked! When we stepped on the field against any team there was no question who was going to win – us! There was not a team we played against that brought fear of defeat to our minds! The confidence in victory that we came out on the field with made playing so much more fun!
Can you imagine living life with that kind of confidence? Imagine if we set out to live each day fighting from victory, not just for victory! How would live differently knowing that we have already won the battle?
The battle of Jericho was won before Joshua and the Israelites even started walking around the city. God told Joshua, “I have given Jericho into your hand”. Listen to those words closely, “I have given”. God was making it so clear to Joshua that the battle was already won and victory was already his. In case you didn’t know, Jericho was what separated the children of Israel from the Promised Land that was promised to God’s children. God’s plan was to get them to this land, and what God sets in motion, happens! There was no city, including Jericho that was going to be a hinderance for God’s plan. Jericho was already defeated all Joshua was supposed to do was to follow the plan God set in place that would lead to the walls tumbling down (Joshua 6:3-5). In faith they heard God and walked around the walls and the walls came tumbling down.
John 12:31 tell us that through Jesus that the Christian soldier, that you and me, stands in a position of victory because Jesus has already defeated every spiritual enemy that stands in our path.
- In the wilderness – Matthew 4:1-11
- In ministry – Matthew 12:22-29
- On the cross – Colossians 2:13-15
- In His resurrection and ascension – Ephesians 1:19-23
It is because Jesus won the battle that we can live our life in full assurance and confidence day to day in victory. Just like our 7th grade football team new we won before the game was played, we can live each day knowing that there is no sin that has overtaken us that Jesus has not defeated first. There is no stronghold that can take us down because Jesus has already taken it down. “If God is for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31)
How are you living today knowing that the battle has been won? How are you living today in the victory that Jesus gave you through of his life, death, and resurrection? As a child of God, you are more than conquerors, not because of anything that you have done, but because of who Jesus is, what he has conquered, and who you are in Christ!
