So, How Do You Function?

The past several weeks we have been focusing on what the Church is all about and how we are to define it.  When you ask people in our culture what the church is about you notoriously get answers like, “the place where people gather who are Christians”, “the place where they learn about Jesus”, “a building where people sing cheesy songs and listen to a pastor speak about boring things for way too long”.  The reality is that we define church by what we do – our activities, our customs, our tribal songs and dances, and our middle name (Baptist, Methodist, Non-Denominational, etc.)

Is that what Jesus had in mind when He said in Matthew, “And on this rock I will build MY CHURCH.”

In our series we defined the church as God’s People, saved by God’s Power for God’s Purpose.  When we define it this way the church all of a sudden a gets way bigger than just a Sunday morning gathering.  Do not hear me say Sunday Church is bad and wrong, Vantage Point is gathering every Sunday and will till we hear from Jesus we are to do it differently.  What we are hoping is to get VP’s family on board with thinking that all that we do is not defined by our Tribe but all that we do is defined first by 1) Who God is? 2) What God did? 3) Who we are because of God’s Power? and 4) What God created us to do?

You can go back and listen to how we answered those questions on our website under sermons.  Go to

This past week we spent time talking about how God has created the individual members of the body to function in the church.  We all have a purpose and function defined not by our abilities and personalities, but by God’s Grace.  Ephesians 4:7 says, “But grace was given to each one of us each according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” What are these gifts that He has given us and why do we have them: “11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ”, (Ephesians 4:11-12, ESV).

Take some time and take this Ministry Survey and see where function most naturally to equip and build up – to make disciples who make disciples.  It is pretty awesome to see how God has your functioning in the body to grow God’s creation.  After you take it share it with your pastor or leaders or Missional Community. It is also pretty amazing to see how God puts us together as a team.  It is not about one person, but everyone doing their part to see God’s mission accomplished.
